Dear Parents and Carers,
It’s hard to believe that we are in the last term already. We hope everyone had a lovely Spring break. Last term was very busy and we will continue to have many exciting events and activities this term.
Inquiry Unit
Our unit of study this term is called “Preparing the Stage”. The students will be supported through the creative process of developing interesting characters, settings and stories as they build a story. They will develop storyboards, design and build props for purpose and photograph moments of their story. This unit will be largely integrated into our English Program. There will be an Expo for parents to view the student’s work. Date to be advised.
Literacy
During Reader’s Workshop this term, we will continue to focus on building the reading strategies good readers use:
• Readers Theatre- students will be reading and acting out plays;
• making inferences;
• locating facts and details;
• interpreting questions;
• revision – Using all our Reading Powers- making connections, visualizing, questioning, inferring and transforming our thinking.
In Writing this term, we will focus on writing narratives and plays. We will work towards developing the student’s skills in writing descriptive settings, developing interesting characters and including a problem and resolution. Students will focus on extending their sentences to become more complex and will use a range of vocabulary and language to make their writing more descriptive and interesting for the reader.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students will further develop their understanding of number, place value and the four processes. Students will be introduced to decimals and fractions. They will also be collecting data and representing and interpreting data in a number of different displays including tables, column and picture graphs. The students will learn how to measure temperature using a thermometer.

After admiring some amazing art works painted by “foot and mouth” artists with disabilities, we had a go at drawing with either our feet or mouths. We realised how difficult it was and that the artists would have need to be very persistent and practice a lot to reach the amazing standards that they have.
Here are some of our attempts:
We have been writing poems to express our feelings about having a disability. Our poems all show our empathy for people with disabilities.
Here are some Rhyming poems.
Some have an AA BB pattern and some have an AB AB pattern:
Here are some cinquain poems. Cinquains are 5 lined poems with rules for each line and they don’t rhyme.
Here’s one more rhyming poem that shows a lot of feeling:

Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome back to Term 3. We have some exciting learning experiences planned for children this term.
Literacy During Reader’s Workshop this term, we will continue to focus on the strategies that good readers use to gain meaning, such as:
Each week we will focus on a specific comprehension strategy and revise thinking tools to encourage a deeper level of thinking about a text. Students will be continuing to work on their Book Fair projects which will be on display for everyone to see in Literacy and Numeracy week.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge continues this term and finishes in early September, so continue to support your child by encouraging them to read and upload their books onto the Premier’s Reading Challenge website to meet the challenge before it ends: http://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/events/prc/Pages/default.aspx
Writing this term will focus on writing procedural texts such as recipes and how to texts, letter writing and explanation texts. Students will plan, write and publish their writing ensuring they have the correct structure. Editing and revising will play an important role before publishing their work. Grammar will be an integral part of the writing program. We will continue to focus on a specific spelling pattern or rule each week.
Mathematics In Mathematics, students continue to consolidate their understanding of place value. They will further develop their understanding of addition and subtraction including using a variety of mental and written methods to solve problems. We will use these skills in relation to Australian money and will add and subtract to calculate the cost of purchases and give correct change. Activities to develop skills in measurement: length, perimeter, angles and time will also be covered. Students will estimate and measure length using metric units, calculate the perimeter on shapes. They will identify and compare angles and tell the time on analogue and digital clocks and read timetables and calendars. They will apply their knowledge in Mathematics to solve real life problems.
Inquiry Unit Our unit of study this term is called “In Their Shoes.” The students will learn about social justice issues experienced by people with disabilities and those suffering financial hardship. They
learn about the role that rules and laws play in our community as they share their opinions about existing laws. They will research a disability and write creatively about an important day in the life of someone who has the disability that they have researched.
Student Wellbeing- Human Literacy Pedagogy Student welfare will continue to remain a focus in term 2. Students will participate in a weekly Human Literacy session dealing with different SPICE (S- Social, P- Physical, I- Intellectual, C- Cultural and E- Emotional) elements. They will be involved in setting individual and class goals which will be the focus for the week with the intention of gaining Innovation hour on Friday.
Please support your child to complete their homework, including reading, spelling, times tables and Mathletics so that they develop good work habits.
Help your child to support their grade’s rubbish free day on a Wednesday by using reusable containers and continue to support the Walk to School Wednesday Program. Your continued support to ensure the correct uniform colours are worn would also be appreciated.
